Summer Institute Day 2
The second day of our Summer Institute was spent at the Romberg Tiburon Center.
Today’s Goals:
Content: 1) Use science knowledge to solve a problem (connect science and engineering) and 2) explore methods of data collection and analysis
Pedagogical: 1) Develop tools for collaboration and group work and 2) Engage in engineering design process, including multiple iterations
NGSS Three Dimensional Focus: Review engineering learning progression
Today started off with an engaging presentation by Adam, a real scientist who is currently working with a team to design and build a buoy. On Thursday, we had the opportunity to see that buoy in person.

We spent most of the rest of the day engaged in the engineering design process. The team initially focused on brainstorming and designing their own buoys.

After lunch, the team worked towards building, testing, and rebuilding their buoys, if necessary.

After designing and making adjustments to our designs, the team took time to reflect on how what we had done embodied the three dimensions of the NGSS (science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts).
