Summer Institute Day 5
Today’s Goals:
Content: 1) Synthesize learning from throughout the week and 2) Explore the role of language in science learning.
Pedagogical: Use text to support learning in science
NGSS Three Dimensional Focus: Plan ways to share NGSS with your school community.
Our final day began with a book fest, in order to integrate literacy more deeply into science learning. Teachers had the opportunity to explore all different types of books about people, places, and designs that shaped the world.
Next, we heard a presentation from Stephanie about helping our students to think like scientists.
The rest of the time until lunch was spent with our grade level teams, creating posters which provided a brief outline of the units that the different grade levels had been planning throughout the week.
After lunch, we engaged in our final design challenge of the week. In this design challenge, teams had to design a boat that would effectively stay above water, even when subjected to some significant waves. Every team was successful on their first try!
To wrap up our week, the team discussed how to integrate what we had learned in to the classroom next year.
